On 11. March 2009 Epic-Legacy released a new E.L.O. compilation entitled "The Collection" with the catalogue-number 88697 480462, on the Camden label in the UK. In fact a new edition of “ELO’s Greatest Hits”

The quasi classical running-order without any changings in the songs versions. Apart from a clever sentence, which give information about the group, there are no further information, except the truly beautiful artwork.

In 2009 Sony USA released a Slider Case edition from "Al Over The World, with the “Eco-friendly-package”. It was released in a beautiful slider box containing the normal EEC CD, lying loose in an extendable cardboard sleeve which is firmly anchored in a cardboard slipcase and is therefore not entirely removable.

Because no booklet is enclosed, additional information was provided on www.musicmadesimple.info in the form of a simple sheet with the song titles.

Note different credits and FBI logo on CD to the first issue in a standard jewel case from 2005.

Who's That?

"Flashback" is back again! Almost exactly 10 years after the first release on 21 November 2000 the box set has been re-released in a smaller size on November 5th 2010. The new box has the order-code Epic / Legacy 88697807792.

The 2010 edition is 4mm smaller than the 2000-box and 61mm shorter, with 5mm from the top and 55 mm from the bottom missing. The smaller clipping was still reduced by about 110 mm, so that no one has the impression that something is missing. Due to the new plastic inserts for the retention of the CDs the box set itself has only become 1 mm thicker.

The print on the CDs is exactly the same, including © 2000, but with a stronger print of the song titles. On the back of the CD's you can read the new order numbers. The 44-page booklet has been expanded by four sides in order to protect the now like a real book embedded booklet from getting damaged by the CDs. The information in the booklet has been maintained page by page, but each page had to be revised due to the new format. The font has been reduced, which led to other line breaks. Therefore more space was created to reduce the size of the photos only slightly.

At first glance, only Jeff's thanks to the musicians on page 40 fell by the wayside. Given the fact that one had to revise the text, somebody then could at least have corrected the error in the liner notes that "Zoom" appears in June 2001 (instead of April) and it was the first album in 14 years (instead of 15).

"Flashback" was personally put together by Jeff Lynne for the 30th Anniversary of E.L.O. and should also pave the way for the next E.L.O. album "Zoom". It also opened the E.L.O. Remaster series of original albums. It is perhaps quite a clever move, not to compile a different CD box set for the 40th Anniversary of the E.L.O., but to re-release "Flashback" for the 40th Birthday. It shows to all buyers, what a milestone "Flashback" was in the ELO-story.

Jeff Lynne's discontent, how Bev Bevan's "E.L.O. of the 90's" had developed, led to consistently acting to straighten out the image of E.L.O. Again. He took all efforts to get "Flashback" right. He personally took over the song selection and supervised the re-mastering of the songs, which he equated with a kind of cleaning a dusty glass. The computer technology of 2000 made it possible to not only copy analogue tape to digital, but also to prepare them in a way that a new clarity is created between the tracks, exactly as the recordings in the studio should have sounded.

The addition of compression, which was required for the limited frequency response of the record and music cassette and was on the previous CDs easily implemented only with enhanced treble and bass fell away by the new techniques. Thus "Flashback" became the first album with new, cleaned E.L.O. sound.

Jeff Lynne wrote for all the songs personal comments and revealed to us a few surprises in terms of recording time and instruments. He even added six "new" unreleased songs, since with the "Pro-Tools" computer program it was now possible to recycle old demo tapes and add new recording tracks. In addition to the on compilations usual other earlier in- and out faded songs, there is with Mama (New Edit) a shortened version with cuts included. The reduction to 2:58-minutes is at first listen not noticed.

One Summer Dream has also a shortened intro. With Do Ya (Unedited Alternative Mix), we hear the song in its original full length with louder vocals. Jeff later shortened the song for the album. Mission (A World Record) (Alternative mix) has a different intro and a few missing backing vocal lines. Jeff now probably considered the two versions more interesting than the officially published ones.

On Rockaria! and Last Train To London we hear the count-in intro and Hold On Tight has an alternate intro with bells and synthesizer effects, which was not used on the album "Time". Indian Queen (Demo) is a demo of a song that had not made it onto "Eldorado". Xanadu (New Version) has been completely re-recorded by Jeff. This beautiful, rockier version shows just how good the composition is and probably saved Jeff from legal settlements with MCA for the 1980 version with Olivia Newton-John.

Love Changes All is a new song that is based on the instrumental track of the 1980 recorded Xanadu Overture, which opened in the movie the end credit section and found no use, because the title song is introduced by Drum Dreams. The rhythm track got a melody line and new intermediate parts and a brand new song was born.

Grieg's Piano Concerto In A-Minor, a rock adaptation of the classic hit that had been recorded by Richard Tandy and Jeff, and Tears In Your Life, Helpless and Who's That? originate from 1982 and have been laid down during the recording sessions for "Secret Messages", but never work on again until now.

Who's That? certainly never came into consideration as a song for a new album because it is more of a joke song in the style of Baby I Apologise. Tears In Your Life and Helpless are however two strong songs that definitely wouldn't have been out of place on the "Secret Messages" album.

All 53 remastered songs sound just great and it's good that "Flashback" it now available again. It distracts from the fact that the sticker on the box still says "30 Years Of E.L.O. ".

In early November 2010 the German Good Times Magazine released the CD-series “Good Times Edition” including 12 CD's. From Electric Light Orchestra this particular “The Collection” was chosen.

The identical Camden label UK issued from 2009 was sold in a cardboard slider case with the catalogue-number 88697597202 9, featuring the Good Times Logo. Why they had chosen “The Collection”, which had the identical track- listing as “ELO's Greatest Hits”, could be explained because that album charted in 1979 and the actual re-release seemed to be easy to take over.

Rock 'N' Roll Is King

Exclusively from Sony UK a "new" "The Very Best Of Electric Light Orchestra", 88697920962 appeared on 7 June 2011. It had a fantastic artwork showing the new, slightly run-down "Out Of The Blue" spaceship in a great collage with nine of these ships revolve around a large space station, which is also in the design of the famous E.L.O.-ship.

It is however, partially not covered and has a metal reinforcement, instead of the yellow, red and blue design. Also located on the station are high rise towers and it has an external power unit. Yes, nice to see how the E.L.O. universe develops. This artwork of the slipcase is already worth the money alone.

But whoever believes that they simply recycled old CDs in a new slipcase is wrong. The album was completely re-printed and produced with 12-page booklet, because all 2005 issues had appeared through Sony/BMG.

This CD has the new Sony logo on slipcase, case back, booklet and CD label. Very well done and a complete surprise to us fans. The release date was also cleverly chosen, as the album charted in the UK at number 22 and climbed up in the following week to the 10th place. So there's still interest. Great.

Essential ELO - 88697977522RE1
No Answer UAS 5573

"The Essential Electric Light Orchestra", Epic Legacy 88697973612, appeared on 14th October 2011 at Sony Europe. The Super Jewel Case contains two CDs that are clicked on top of each other in the case, making the basic and tedious flipping of the previous cases with the often very difficult extraction of the CDs unnecessary.

"The Essential" is a series by Legacy, which enjoys great popularity in the United States and has all the leading artists of Sony Legacy featured. Back in 2003 a single CD with 15 songs had already appeared from E.L.O.. The new completely revised set now contains 37 E.L.O.-singles. The revised artwork for the entire series is based on a base color and is otherwise entirely held in black / silver reflective paint. The basic color has been chosen mint green.

The song selection of the UK and US-Singles appeared again in chronological order. The 1995 double-CD "Strange Magic" featured all 27 US singles in their album versions (plus two songs, minus 3 "Xanadu" singles from MCA. The 1997 2-CD "The Light Years" contained all 36 UK singles in their single versions (+ 2 songs) which had appeared until then.

10538 Overture is the single version, which will fade out sooner and ends at 4:00 in UK. In the USA it ends already after 3:55 and one can't hear the horn getting quieter. On "The Essential" the reconstructed version from 1997 taken from “Light Years" has been used, on which exactly at 3:20 five tones in the descending Celloriff are missing and it ends only at 4:02. Roll Over Beethoven is the usual cut single-version of 4:30, as it was released worldwide. There is also a shorter DJ-version for radio stations in existance, running at 3:34.

Showdown is included here in its complete UK version (4:07), which was faded a bit quieter at the end. The shorter U.S. single version was already faded-out at 3:54. Ma-Ma-Ma Belle is featured here in a little earlier faded-out album version of 3:36, which begins without the piano prelude. The US version ended at 3:25. The UK version of 3:20 has a stark cut with a rising cello note in the second chorus and appeared as a reconstructed version on "Light Years".

Can't Get It Out Of My Head is included here in its single edit version with 3:06 running time, as it was released worldwide. After the first verse the second chorus follows straight away and the 37-second intermediate section has been shortened without the Moog/percussion duel to 20 seconds. On the reconstructed "Light Years" version contained here we hear at 1:20 a synth sound that is not included on the original single version because they probably had cut it a quarter of a second too early.

Evil Woman is contained in its usual pure song version with 4:10. It is as always the version minus orchestra transition, which is on the album. In the US the song was edited with 5 cuts, fade-ins and -outs down to 3:15. Nightrider is included here in the UK single version of 3:41. The used 4:26 album version fades in earlier and fades out later. The reconstruction is very well done, although you can hear the decaying string-riff on the single one more time (4x).

Strange Magic is also included in its usual pure 4:08 version, as we are missing the orchestra intro here too. The US single was only running 3:25, because it fades in later, has two edits, and is included on the "Face The Music" remastered CD from 2006. Rockaria! Here included as album version (3:14). The single version (3:12) starts 2 seconds later, without the false start of the opera singer Mary Thomas which is on "Light Years".

Telephone Line: Album version (4:40) like on the UK single. The US version is 3:57 long, begins only after the dial tones and misses the second line in the second chorus. Mr. Blue Sky: Album version (5:05), like on the UK single. The US single from CBS contains a 3:44 version, in which the radio tuning intro and the Concerto For A Rainy Day-Outro are missing. Sweet Talkin' Woman: Album version (3:48), like on the UK single. The US single version runs a little faster, so the song ends at 3:41.

It's Over: Album version (4:09). The single version has been cut in the US to 3:58. It begins after the 13-second string-intro. In the shorter radio version (3:38) additional 15 seconds were edited out after the piano solo (from 3:14 to 3:29). Shine A Little Love is contained in its 4:09 minute single version. It starts after the intro chorus sung backwards (Johannes Brahms' Die Blümelein Sie Schlafen).

Xanadu (New Version) with 3:21 running time re-recorded by Jeff Lynne for "Flashback" in 2000. Xanadu (Sung by Olivia Newton-John) appeared on Single in 1980 like the album version with 3:26. Don't Walk Away: Album version (4:47) like the UK single, but the guitar solo at the fade is a little quieter. Hold On Tight: Album version (3:06). A short version for US radio stations with 2:59 begins right after the guitar intro, directly with the piano.

Twilight was shortened from 3:42 to 3:29, missing the outro and the song fades in later. Here the fade-in is quicker, like on the reconstruction for "Light Years" and runs through the complete transition into the first notes of Yours Truly, 2095. Rock 'n' Roll Is King is included as single-version with 3:08 which was cut from the 3:45 album version by omitting the short intro and the "Secret Messages" album outro.

Secret Messages: Album version (4:44). On "Light Years" the single version with 3:33 was used, fading-in fast after the first 33 seconds and is already faded-out at 4:11 (23 seconds after the long "everywheeeeere") and misses a few takes before the fade. Four Little Diamonds: Album version (4:05). The single version was released worldwide with 3:55, because the song starts only after the count-in intro from Jeff. The album version was only used for the 12”-single (how fitting!).

In the USA and UK Alright and Moment Of Paradise were only released as promo singles for radio stations. Surrender: Album version (2:34), was only released as a download single. Latitude 88 North: Album version (3:34), same as before. On all other tracks the album version is identical to the single version.

The US edition of "The Essential" has the order code 88697 977522 , appeared on 17th October, and is printed in a medium blue. It is housed in a normal 2CD jewel case and is a straight 1:1 take-over from the EU issue except of the front cover image, which was printed without the reflective silver, just a shade of gray.

Why the color of the band name was then changed from mint green to blue instead, remains a mystery. Only a red sticker makes the artwork a bit more colorful. The songs are the same versions as on the EU issue. Although not all UK and U.S. singles are included, "The Essential" still offers all the essential E.L.O. Singles.

On 6 October 2012 Big Trilby, distributed by Frontiers Records released a new compilation from Jeff Lynne with re-recordings of the hits of the Electric Light Orchestra. The album FR CD 570E released as an Ecol-Book with embossed sleeve, along with a standard jewel case version, plus as a single vinyl album FR LP 570 and in Japan as MICP-30033 in a Jewel Case.

For a brief moment it was not clear if it is a Jeff Lynne album with ELO cover versions, or if it is a regular E.L.O. album. At least it was promoted under the ELO moniker. Despite the e-recordings it has the character of a compilation, and is therefore listed here. All tracks are recorded by Jeff Lynne alone, with some bits by Laura Lynne, Steve Jay and back from the very start of the project also with Ryan Ulate and Marc Mann. The versions should be credited as 2012 Version.

The Japanese CD contains as a Bonus track a live recording from the forthcoming album "Live", done at the "Zoom-Tour". The iTunes "Mr. Blue Sky - Deluxe Edition" contained two extra songs and two more Live versions of Jeff Lynne and Richard Tandy from the Bungalow Palace, which was later released only on the Blu-ray and DVD Bonus on "Mr. Blue Sky: The Story Of Jeff Lynne And ELO", included on Jeff Lynne's ELO: Live In Hyde Park".

On 11 December 2013 E.L.O.'s "All Over The World - The Very Best Of Electric Light Orchestra" released was published by Sony Music Japan International Inc. as SICP 30446, entitled "Very Best Of ELO" in the "80's Best" series. Despite it comes in the new Blu-Spec 2 Format, sonically there is no additional value.

Sony Japan has now opted for the original version. So without Twilight and instead with Wild West Hero. The concept of 2005, to release the album with a specific title-running for each county was abandoned.

The CD contained a 20-page black/white booklet with Japanese liner notes and the lyrics in English and Japanese, and the regular booklet.

On 10th June 2016 the 2005 success album "The Very Best Of Electric Light Orchestra - All Over The World" was re-released in a new CD-slipcase with a revised artwork. Epic 529129 3 contained the regular CD in its recent edition with the actual copyright sentence "Sony Music Entertainment International Services GmbH, PO Box 510, 33311 Guetersloh, Germany".

The beautiful slipcase in partially metallic colours shows on the back the album sleeve of the actual ELO Album "Alone In The Universe".

In the UK the 2005 released CD album has so far been reissued in 2009, 2011, 2013 and charted every time, plus in Japan in 2013 & 2015. It has sold more than 1 million copies on 25 July 2016 and reached No. 1 of the Charts for "physical Albums". On 29 July it reached for the first time the No. 1 of the "UK official Top 100 Album Charts" which counted the downloads and audio-streams. It became E.L.O.'s third No. 1 Album in the UK. A big help was surely the first LP edition of the album, also released on 10. June as a double LP. Epic / Legacy, 88985 3112351, makes a great impression with its revised artwork.

Probably the old, designed for CD artwork, extended from 5" to 12", did not look too good. The old "Out Of The Blue"-Spaceship, Sun and Earth are much more detailed and therefore look very three-dimensional.

For the internal panel side, the artwork was supplemented by an extended design in which the spaceship is a bit further away from the earth, so the view into the spaceship through the windows is very nice. One no longer sees only the consoles, but the entire interior of the spaceship, as shown on the inside of the fold-out cover of "Out Of The Blue".

The LP‘s are housed in white, PE lined inner sleeves along with a 12"-insert. On the front the spaceship is flying out of the sun. The back contains liner notes by Jeff Lynne from April 2005 and the album credits and copyright records.

For the label the old CD label artwork was used, as previously in blue for the 1st LP and for the first time in red for the 2nd LP. For the first time on vinyl the song Xanadu (here in the uncredited) New Version was released!
